Biography

Dr. Steven J. Bates is a board-certified plastic surgeon known for his meticulous skill, creative eye, and patient-focused care. From the very first plastic surgery case he witnessed in medical school, Dr. Bates knew he had found his calling. The combination of precision and artistry drew him to the specialty—and continues to inspire his work today. He is a trusted choice for individuals in San Jose and throughout the Bay Area seeking high-quality cosmetic surgery.

Dr. Bates earned his bachelor’s degree in biological sciences from the University of California, Davis, before graduating first in his class of 190 students from Chicago Medical School in 2000. He was inducted into the prestigious Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society for his academic excellence.

He went on to complete six years of intensive plastic surgery training at Stanford University, where he conducted award-winning research in wound healing, participated in international medical missions, and gained extensive hands-on experience in all aspects of plastic surgery. Dr. Bates then completed an additional year of advanced training at UCLA as a clinical instructor in hand and microsurgery.

Following his training, he accepted what he called his “dream job” at the Palo Alto Medical Foundation, where he continues to bring expert care, surgical precision, and compassion to every patient interaction.

“Plastic surgery is all about balance. It’s about finding the perfect space between precision and creativity: knowing when to color within the lines and when to think outside the box. This delicate balance is what makes my specialty such a challenging and rewarding career, one that few are willing or able to pursue.”
