How does CO2 laser resurfacing work?

There are 2 important aspects to understand about how laser resurfacing works:

Clear away damaged skin

The “resurfacing” part of the treatment is about clearing away damaged skin cells in the outer layer of your skin.

Our skin is divided into layers: the epidermis, the dermis, and the subcutaneous layer and it’s constantly producing new cells. As we get older, that cell production slows down and that’s what causes our skin to age.

During a CO2 laser skin treatment, the laser is removing the outermost layer of skin cells, which literally removes the damaged cells. This has the added bonus of encouraging your body’s natural healing response.

Stimulate collagen production

As the laser is removing the outer layer of your skin, it’s heating the dermis layer beneath it. This causes your body to start producing collagen, which is the foundation of younger-looking skin!

Collagen and elastin are the two proteins that give your skin its shape and structure. Our body produces less collagen as we get older, which is what leads to wrinkles, sagging skin, and a duller appearance.

By boosting your body’s production of collagen, laser resurfacing creates smoother, firmer skin. The best part? Those results will continue to improve over time because your body will keep producing collagen!

The laser can reach different depths

With the CO2RE® by Candela we’re able to customize the depth of your laser treatment. This allows us to treat a variety of different issues. Deeper laser treatments cause coagulation which helps tighten your skin and produce even more collagen. Superficial laser treatments can address surface-level imperfections.

We can treat multiple layers of skin at the same time! Meaning we can treat several skin concerns with just one treatment.

What can I expect when I book CO2 laser resurfacing in the Bay Area?

Consultation

At Entre Nous we pride ourselves on creating treatment plans completely tailored to the patient’s specific needs. We do this through an in-depth consultation process.

During your consultation, we’ll ask about your relevant medical history, your concerns, and your goals. After we assess your skin, we’ll make recommendations based on your skin’s unique profile.

We’ll consider your tolerance for downtime and the amount of change you’re wanting to see. Based on this information, we’ll determine the depth of your treatment and how many treatments you’ll need. The deeper the treatment, the longer your recovery will be.

CO2 laser resurfacing can address such a variety of issues, that it’s very likely we can include it in your treatment plan. We might also recommend complementary treatments that will further assist you in meeting your aesthetic goals.

Treatment

Laser resurfacing is an in-office, outpatient procedure that we perform in our luxurious med spa in Menlo Park. You’ll be shown to one of our comfortable treatment rooms and invited to sit back and relax.

Your laser technician will clean and prep your skin before adjusting the laser based on your unique treatment plan. Deeper laser treatments may cause some discomfort (our patients describe it as small “pinpricks”), but we have options available to address that. Your comfort is our top priority.

Depending on the size of your treatment area, your session will last 30 minutes to 2 hours. Generally, more aggressive treatments tend to take longer.

Next Steps

After your treatment, we’ll provide you with detailed aftercare instructions to ensure a quick and easy recovery. Superficial laser treatments may only require 24 hours for recovery, whereas deeper laser resurfacing can take 3 to 7 days.

As your skin sheds its old cells, there will be some peeling. Gently cleansing your skin can help encourage this process to reveal your younger, rejuvenated skin!

It’s very important that you avoid unnecessary sun exposure while your skin is healing.

How to maintain your laser resurfacing results

CO2 laser resurfacing is an investment in your skin’s health and, of course, it makes sense that you’d want to take care of this investment.

Medical grade skincare, complementary treatments, and regular maintenance treatments can help maintain your results in the long term.

Level-Up Your Skincare Game

If you’re not already following a daily skincare regimen, that’s your first step. If you have a skincare routine but are still using over-the-counter products, you should give medical-grade skincare the chance to change your life.

Medical-grade products have better and more potent ingredients, which is why they’re only available at med spas. That also means that those products can give your skin better results in a shorter amount of time.

You don’t have to get too fancy or add a dozen steps to your morning skincare routine to start feeling the benefits.

Sunscreen

The number one, non-negotiable thing you need for your daily skincare is sunscreen. The sun’s UV rays are responsible for 90% of skin changes. This means using a daily SPF of at least 30 is the key to maintaining your skin’s health and youthful glow.

Moisturize

Hydrated skin is happy skin. A daily moisturizer protects your skin from the environment and keeps your skin dewy.

Cleanser

Giving your skin a thorough cleanse every day is a crucial step to keeping your skin happy and healthy. It clears away dirt, oil, and other debris that can clog your pores and dull your skin.

During your consultation, our aestheticians can help you figure out a specific skincare routine that works for your skin type and needs!

Complementary treatments

HydraFacial

A HydraFacial combines physical and chemical exfoliation, pore extractions, and serum infusion to deliver 45 minutes of rejuvenation to your skin. Monthly HydraFacials help to ensure healthy skin all year round and are a great way to maintain the results of your laser treatments.

Chemical Peels

Regular chemical peels can help encourage your skin’s cell turnover rate in between your laser treatments. You can get chemical peels more often than laser treatments.

Botox

For patients with deep wrinkles, Botox or Daxxify (a Botox alternative) are easy and effective solutions to further support the results of your laser treatments. Once you’ve kissed your wrinkles goodbye with resurfacing, neurotoxins can prevent them from forming again.

Frequently asked questions about CO2 laser resurfacing in the Bay Area

When should I schedule laser resurfacing?

Laser resurfacing is best scheduled in the fall and winter months. You need to avoid sun exposure during your healing, and the cooler months make that easier to accomplish.

What is recovery like?

More aggressive laser treatments take longer to heal. Your recovery will be based on your specific treatment. During recovery, you’ll experience some flaking and peeling as your skin sheds away the damaged cells. It’s important to avoid sun exposure and to keep your skin clean and moisturized!

Should I get CO2 laser resurfacing or HALO?

The main difference between CO2 vs HALO is the amount of downtime. CO2 provides more dramatic results but sometimes with more downtime than a HALO treatment. With the CO2RE® by Candela, we’re able to more precisely customize the depth of your laser treatment, so you’re not necessarily going to experience a lot of downtime, depending on your treatment plan and goals.
